From Fungi to Packaging: The Fascinating Process of Mycelium Production
SCIENCE

Selecting the Mycelium Strain
The first step in the production process is selecting the appropriate strain of mycelium. Different strains have varying properties, such as growth rate, strength, and texture. The chosen strain must be able to grow on the selected substrate and produce the desired characteristics for the final product.
Once the strain is selected, it is cultured and stored under controlled conditions until it is ready for use in the production process.

Growing Mycelium on a Substrate
The next step in the process is growing the mycelium on a substrate. The substrate can be any organic material, such as sawdust, straw, or agricultural waste. The mycelium is added to the substrate and allowed to grow under controlled conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and light.
As the mycelium grows, it forms a dense network of fibers that bind the substrate together. This results in a material that is strong, lightweight, and biodegradable.

Shaping the Mycelium into the Desired Form
Once the mycelium has grown on the substrate, it is harvested and shaped into the desired form. This can be done using molds or by hand. The mycelium is then dried to stop further growth and to increase its durability.
The final product is a versatile material that can be used for a variety of applications, including packaging, insulation, and construction.
